Energy Capacitor
The Energy Capacitor is a metallized film capacitor used to store energy. The energy capacitor stores the energy needed for pacing and defibrillation. The actual capacity of the energy capacitor is calculated during the defibrillation calibration process. The nominal value is 196 μF. When the device is turned off, current is drawn from the capacitor. The pacing and defibrillation therapy panel is powered by an induction coil. The power capacitor is mounted on the PCB with a capacitor holder. The power capacitor leads connect directly to the therapy board.

Capacitor Discharge Tool
ATTENTION! electric shock hazard. Rescue devices designed and labeled for non-biphasic defibrillators are not intended for use with biphasic defibrillators. The discharge of the power capacitor takes a few minutes.
Third-party devices for discharging two-phase capacitors are commercially available. Contact your support representative for more information.
An example configuration of a two-phase capacitor discharge device for discharging an energy storage capacitor is shown. The materials used in the example are:
■ 10 kΩ, 2 W resistor (ten 1 KΩ 2 W), high-voltage
■ 5 MΩ, 5 W resistor, high-voltage
■ Neon lamp, NE76, NE2, or NE2H
■ 8 AWG copper wire
■ Clear plastic tubing, capable of insulating 10 kV
■ 10 kV insulation
■ RTV, silicone rubber sealant
Warning! Electrocution hazard Defibrillators that are not designed and labeled for biphasic use are not suitable for use with biphasic pacemakers. Power capacitors take several minutes to discharge. The capacitor discharge tool is designed to discharge the energy storage capacitor before beginning any maintenance work on the internal components of the device. How to use a capacitor discharger:
1. Remove the battery.
2. Remove the top case.
3. Place the probe on the solder joint of the inductor and hold it. (see photo on next page)
4. Place another probe on the capacitor wiring connector. Keep both probes stationary.
5. Observe the neon light on the transmitter. When charged to around 90 volts, the fluorescent lamp lights up.
6. After the neon light turns off, hold the probe in the designated place for at least 30 seconds.
