high quality electrode
The use of high quality electrodes is an important part of the overall monitoring process. When choosing electrodes, keep the following guidelines in mind:
1. The electrodes are available in different shapes and sizes, are made of different materials, and are recommended for different clinical applications (eg Holter, ICU, etc.). Use only electrodes specified by the manufacturer of the monitor/defibrillator being used.
2. All electrodes selected should be of the same brand and type to minimize noise.
3. Follow the directions for use on the electrode package (eg expiration date).
4. Bulk packaged electrodes should be used or resealed immediately after opening the package, as prolonged exposure to air will prematurely dry out the electrodes and reduce their stickiness and conductivity. Consider writing down the date and time the package was opened to better control the quality of the electrodes.
5. For prolonged monitoring, replace the electrodes regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Electrode application
Correct placement of the electrodes helps maximize the quality of the ECG signal. The next time you use the electrodes, follow these steps:
1. If possible and appropriate, explain to the patient how to apply the electrodes to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.
2. For patient comfort, connect the electrodes to each electrode before using the electrodes.
3. For 3- and 5-lead electrodes, place the electrodes as shown in Figures 2 and 3. For 10-lead electrodes, place the electrodes on the flat, fleshy parts of the arms and legs, avoiding the bony areas and major muscles if possible. , as shown in Figure 4. This minimizes muscle and movement-related artifacts and maximizes ECG signal strength.
4. Cover the electrode by pressing the entire edge of the electrode. Avoid pressing directly on the center of the electrode as this will spread the gel and could create air pockets that can cause noise.
NOTE: When using defibrillation pads with multifunction electrodes, it may be necessary to reposition the ECG electrodes to properly position the electrodes and facilitate pacing or defibrillation therapy.Correct placement of the electrodes helps maximize the quality of the ECG signal.
