► Packing Standard

SpO2 is used to measure arterial oxygen saturation, which is the percentage of oxygenated hemoglobin in arterial blood. SpO2 parameters can also provide pulse rate (PR) and volume map wave (Pleth).

1. Select the correct patient category setting (adult/pediatric and neonatal) as this is used to optimize the calculation of SpO2 and pulse numbers.

2. When measuring, make sure that the application site:

  • With pulsatile flow, ideally with good circulatory perfusion.
  • The thickness of the sensor has not changed, causing the sensor to not fit properly.

Be sure to understand all warnings listed in the previous section before applying any sensor to a patient. Also, check the sensors as follows:

  • Check the inside and outside of the sensor. To check inside, gently open the sensor cavity and check for debris on or next to the clear silicone covering the optics.
  • Any sensor showing signs of damage or alteration should not be used for further patient monitoring; instead, dispose of it using appropriate disposal procedures.

► Measurement limit

Certain patient conditions may affect measurement results or cause loss of pulse signals.

Inaccurate measurements can cause, but are not limited to:

  • Improper sensor application
  • High levels of ambient light sources such as surgical lamps (especially those with xenon sources), bilirubin lamps, fluorescent lamps, infrared heating lamps, and direct sunlight
  • Failure to cover sensor with opaque material in conditions of high levels of ambient light
  • Dysfunctional hemoglobin
  • Low peripheral perfusion
  • Excessive or violent patient movement
  • Venous pulsation
  • Intravascular dyes such as polycyanine green or methylene blue
  • External application of colorants (nail polish, dyes,
  • Defibrillation
  • Placing sensors on limbs, using blood pressure cuffs, arterial catheters, or intravascular lines
  • Electromagnetic interference

Loss of pulse signal can occur for the following reasons:

  • The sensor application is too tight
  • Blood pressure cuff expands the same limb with sensor attached
  • Proximal sensor for arterial occlusion
  • Low peripheral perfusion
