When the cuff pressure is higher than the systolic pressure, the artery is blocked and the pressure sensor only detects the cuff pressure.

The extrapolation process uses the decay rate of the signal on either side of the maximum, and the invasive blood pressure measurement can also be used as a reference to correlate with no blood pressure.
