Introduction

The GE 1407-7004-000 is a reusable CO₂ absorbent canister designed for use in GE Datex-Ohmeda anesthesia delivery systems. It sits within the breathing circuit and holds the loose soda lime that removes carbon dioxide from the patient's exhaled gases. Without this canister, the CO₂ would be rebreathed, which is obviously not what you want during anesthesia.

It lets you see the absorbent inside without taking anything apart, so you can check the color change that indicates CO₂ absorption and know when it's time to swap it out. The integrated handle makes it easy to grip and lift, even when it's loaded with 800 grams of absorbent.

Functions

1. Clears CO₂ from the breathing circuit. The canister holds the soda lime that chemically absorbs carbon dioxide from exhaled gases. The transparent body lets you monitor the absorbent's color change — a rough indicator that it's still working.

2. Autoclavable and reusable. Unlike disposable pre-filled canisters, this one is built to be cleaned and sterilized in an autoclave, making it a more cost-effective option over time and reducing waste. It's designed for repeated clinical use.

3. Holds a full 800 grams. Each canister carries up to 800 grams of loose absorbent, giving you a decent runtime between refills. The handle makes it easy to lift and carry when it's full.

Canister release

Push to remove the canister. This allows thebreathing system to vent to the room. Be sure to hold the canister by the handle before releasing thecanister.

Note: Always do a leak test after operating thecanister release.

Replacement Rule

  • For machines with two canisters, both canisters hold carbon dioxide (CO2) absorbent. You must change the absorbent in both canisters, not just one. Change it at least once every week, and the best time is Monday morning. This way, you start the week with fresh absorbent. It is also easy to remember. If the absorbent changes color, becomes hard, or forms lumps, change it sooner. Do not wait until the weekly time.

  • For machines with only one canister, change the absorbent every day. The best time is at the start of the day, before you begin work. One canister is used up faster, so it may stop absorbing CO2 within one day. If you do not change it, the patient may breathe CO2 back in, which is not safe. When you change it, throw away the old absorbent, fill the canister with new absorbent, close it well, and write down the date and time.
