• Providing a time reference: The horizontal axis of the ECG represents time. The motor ensures a constant paper feed speed (such as the commonly used 25 mm/s or 50 mm/s). This allows doctors to accurately measure heart rate, the duration of each waveform (P wave, QRS complex, T wave), and rhythm based on the grid lines on the paper (typically 1 small grid = 0.04 seconds, 1 large grid = 0.2 seconds). If the speed is inaccurate, all time measurements will be inaccurate, leading to misdiagnosis.
• Ensuring waveform accuracy: Smooth paper feed prevents waveform distortion and deformation. Any jitter or lag in speed will cause the recorded waveform to be compressed or stretched, thus misrepresenting the heart's electrical activity.
• Automatic paper feed and retraction: Modern ECG machines often have function buttons to control the paper feed, for example, to position the paper at the correct position before recording begins or to eject the paper tape for removal after recording is complete.
