Cleaning
Cleaning and disinfection takes place in two stages: cleaning and disinfection. The purpose of cleaning is to remove all foreign objects (blood, tissue, protein, scan gels, etc.) from the device. If adequate cleaning cannot be achieved, further sterilization or advanced disinfection procedures can be performed.
Cautions
• All transducers should be thoroughly cleaned after each use to remove debris, blood, mucus, etc. that may remain on the transducer housing (scan head) and cables.
• Biopsy guides must be removed and cleaned separately.
• Transducer parts must be kept dry at all times on parts that will be exposed to liquids to prevent liquid from entering the transducer housing (scan head) area or non-watertight connectors.
• Do not immerse or rinse the transmitter in liquids over 60°C (140°F).
• The use of 70% isopropyl alcohol on transducers, cable glands, and cable mounting surfaces is not recommended. However, the surface of the transducer, the grommet, and the cable can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth or a gauze pad moistened with ethanol.
Warning
• To avoid electric shock, disconnect the transducer from the system before cleaning.
• Handle all transducers with care and do not bump, drop, or subject them to any form of physical shock.
• Use personal protective equipment such as gowns, gloves, and goggles when cleaning transducers with strong disinfectants or sterilants.
• Do not wash or expose the transducer connectors to liquids. The only exception is when the MP-2790 waterproof connector is properly connected to an MP-2790 compatible intraoperative ultrasound transducer.
• Do not immerse the sensor body (scanning head) beyond the immersion points shown in Figures 1-1 through 3-1. Please refer to the user guide for older transducer models not listed in this guide as the immersion point of each transducer is different.
• Follow manufacturer's label for solution strength and exposure time.
• Follow the instructions for use of the cleaning and disinfecting solution, duration, expiry date and activation.
• Always follow established procedures at the hospital, clinic, or office.
Cleaning
1. Disconnect the transducer to be cleaned and decontaminated from the ultrasound system and remove any transducer caps or biopsy guides attached to the transducer.
2. Use a soft, dry cloth or a soft cloth lightly dampened with mild soap or an approved cleaner to remove any debris, blood, mucus, etc. that remains on the probe body (scan head) and cables.
3. Wash the area of contact with the sensor surface with running water and mild soap or an approved cleaner until completely immersed to ensure that all organic and other contaminants are removed. You can use a soft-bristled brush on the probe body up to the point of immersion, but not on the sensitive surface.
Caution
4. Clean the sensor cable, strain relief, and connectors with a soft cloth dampened with ethanol. 70% isopropyl alcohol is not recommended for surface treatment of sensors, cable glands and cable assemblies.
5. Clean the transducer with a clean, dry soft cloth or a clean soft cloth moistened with water to remove soap residue, then wipe the transducer with a clean, dry soft cloth.
6. Inspect the transducer housing (scan head) and cables to ensure they are free of debris, blood, mucus, etc. Remove and dry completely.
