How to use a patient monitor

Patient monitors are widely used in various clinical departments and in pre-hospital first aid to facilitate and better observe the patient's condition changes and vital signs, especially in intensive care units and emergency rooms. Notes on the operation of the item.

Patient monitors are increasingly loved and relied on by medical staff, their patients and relatives due to their high accuracy, convenience and practicability. Pay attention to correct operation and maintenance in daily application, which will bring a lot of convenience to medical staff and help improve the quality of medical care.

Steps for using the multifunctional ECG monitor

Due to different manufacturers and different models, the usage methods are also different, but the overall steps are:

  1. Turn on the power
  2. For ECG monitoring, the simulated limb guide is usually used (depending on the manufacturer: white, black, red; red, yellow, blue; right upper limb, left upper limb, left lower limb). The five leads generally include the chest leads, and the cardiac leads can also be selected according to the patient's condition, and the corresponding English letters are marked on each connector.
  3. Connect the blood oxygen probe, pay attention to the red light-emitting surface and the nails.
  4. Connect the cuff and adjust the blood pressure monitoring time.
  5. Adjust the parameters of each indicator, namely upper and lower limit values, alarm indicators, etc.
  6. Common indicators are: heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, blood pressure, respiratory rate and body temperature.

The placement position of each lead of the multifunctional ECG monitor

Three-lead ECG leads can only obtain standard lead I, II, and III lead ECG;

Five-lead ECG leads can obtain I, II, III, AVR, AVF, AVL, V lead ECG.

In order to facilitate quick connection, we use color marking method to quickly paste the corresponding electrode pads. The colors of three-lead ECG wires are marked as red, yellow, green or white, black, and red; the colors of five-lead ECG wires are marked as white, black, red, green, and brown.

The electrodes with the same color in the leads of the two specifications are placed in different positions. It is more reliable to use the English abbreviations RA, LA, RL, LL, and C to determine the position than to memorize the color.

Precautions for the use of multifunctional ECG monitor

  1. Use 75% alcohol to clean the surface of the measurement site, in order to remove the stratum corneum and sweat stains on the human skin and prevent poor contact of the electrode pads.
  2. Be sure to connect the ground wire, which will play a very important role in the normal display of the waveform.
  3. Choose the appropriate type of blood pressure cuff according to the patient's condition. There are differences between adults, children and neonates. Different specifications of cuffs must be used. Here, only adults are used as an example.
  4. After the cuff is unfolded, it should be wrapped around 1-2cm on the patient's elbow joint, and the tightness should be able to insert 1-2 fingers. Too loose may lead to high pressure measurement; too tight may lead to low pressure measurement, while making the patient uncomfortable, affecting the patient's arm blood pressure recovery. The catheter of the cuff should be placed at the brachial artery, and the catheter should be on the extension of the middle finger.
  5. The arm should be kept flush with the human heart, and the patient should be instructed not to speak or move when the blood pressure cuff is inflated.
  6. The pressure measuring arm should not be used to measure the body temperature at the same time, which will affect the accuracy of the body temperature value.
  7. There should be no drip or malignant trauma, otherwise it will cause blood backflow or wound bleeding.
  8. The patient's nails should not be too long, and should not have any stains, dirt or onychomycosis.
  9. The position of the blood oxygen probe should be separated from the blood pressure measuring arm, because blood flow is blocked during blood pressure measurement, and blood oxygen cannot be measured at this time, and the screen displays the words "blood oxygen probe off".
  10. Generally choose lead II to observe and record heart rate and rhythm.
